A Long Drive

So we sat on stones at the side of the road
And you told me all I needed to know:
I was trying to cross when an old lady lost control of the car that she drove
She was way too fast
I left cracks in the glass when the blow picked me up off my feet
So I tried to remember the pain when I hit the concrete
And you said you knew from the moment we met
And my voice was shaky when I called you back
You said the rain beat down on the hood of your van
When we kissed in the back and made all kinds of plans
And I tried to think of the moment we met
Of the way I felt when I called you back
And I finally said: „I'm not that man
I was born again in the back of that ambulance"
We spent the rest of the day down at Monterey Bay
Where we used to come to relax
When you pulled me close I flinched and said:
„It's time to go back"
And you said I knew from the moment we met
And your heart was racing when I called you back
And I tried so hard and I shook my head
And you looked so lost and I felt so dead
And you showed me letters that I wrote to you
And you played the songs that we'd made love to
And I said: „I really wish I knew
But I'm not that man, and you know it too"
And it's not my fault, as a matter of fact
'Cause my bones were broken and my skull was cracked
And my heartbeat stopped and they brought me back
And whatever you meant, it is gone, it is dead
And you tried not to cry on the long drive home
And you looked so cute and I felt so alone
But you shied away when I touched your hand and said:
„You really died in the back of that ambulance"
There's comfort in starting again, I guess
